Direct and Indirect Speech

Kalimat langsung (Direct), mengulang ucapan pembicara  sama persis. Kalimat langsung biasanya digunakan dalam percakapan di dalam buku, dalam tanda kurung, ataupun dalam darama.
Contoh:
He said, ‘I have clear my job.’
Kalimat langsung (direct)  punyai dua bagian:

-       reporting sentence: klausa yang berisi siapa yang berbicara

-       reported sentence : klausa yang berisi apa yang dibicarakan.
Contoh:
Dood said, “I will get it.”

Kalimat tidak langsung (indirect), mengungkapkan maksud ucapan pembicara dengan ungkapan yang tidak sama persis.
Contoh:
He said (that) he had clear his job.

Perubahan direct menjadi indirect pada statement ditandai dengan ‘that’.
Kalimat langsung yang reporting sentence-nya memiliki verb dalam bentuk present tense (simple present, present continuous, and present perfect atau future tense) maka tidak ada perubahan tenses pada reported sentence dalam bentuk tidak langsung (indirect). Ini biasanya terjadi apabila:
1. Melaporkan suatu percakapan yang masih berlangsung
2. Membaca surat dan melaporkan apa isi surat tersebut
3. Membaca perintah dan langsung melaporkannya pada waktu tersebut
4. Melaporkan pernyataan yang sering muncul

Contoh Direct :

-       Gabriel says, ‘’i’m trying to scold Lucifer’’

-       Michael say, ‘’rain fell every land on earth’’

Contoh Indirect :

-       Gabriel says that he is trying to scold Lucifer

-       Michael says thaht the rain fell every land on earth

4.	Present Future	Abraham said,”I will destroy the building tomorrow”	Past Future	Abraham said that he would destroy the building the day after
5.	Present Perfect	The soldiers said,”We have secured the area”	Past Perfect	The Soldiers said that they had secured the area
6.	Future Continuous	Jones said,”I will be diving in the stream”	Past Future Continuous	Roby said that he would be diving in the stream
7.	Present Perfect Continuous	Noah said,”I have been driving a boat”	Past Perfect Continuos	Noah said that she had been driving a boat
8.	Modals	Gabriel said,”I can deliver the message well”		Janni said that she could deliver the message well.
